Lismore Alive

Lismore Alive is about revitalising Lismore to benefit everyone who loves, lives, works and visits the City.

It’s a project led by Lismore City Council, in partnership with the business and wider community, to create a more vibrant Lismore City Centre, seven days a week.

Can we achieve this? Yes we can – by improving the City’s social and economic activities, by bringing people into the CBD and by creating more services, facilities, jobs and community events.

So what does Lismore want? With the support of local businesses, residents and property owners, Lismore Alive recently surveyed the City’s key stakeholders for their ideas, thoughts and needs. And the results are in. Here are some of the highly supported solutions:

  1. Exploit our natural assets – revitalise the City Centre with more restaurants, outdoor cinemas, music and community activities along the Wilsons Riverbank
  2. Bring people into the CBD on weekends – hold weekend markets in the CBD
  3. An alive City by day and by night – boost city living by developing more “shop top” housing
  4. Build an entertainment precinct with outdoor music, entertainment and local art
  5. A sense of community – create more places to congregate in the CBD with shaded and seating areas

Lismore Alive started in December 2008 and has received great support and endorsement from the New South Wales Department of State and Regional Development, Lismore City Council, the Special Business Rate Variation Levy and Lismore Chamber of Commerce.

So what’s next?

  1. In May 2009, Lismore’s business community engaged a City Centre Manager, Stephen Nelson, charged with helping the CBD become a vibrant place for business, residents and visitors. Many regional cities in Australia have city centre managers to co-ordinate marketing and “place management”. Stephen Nelson will assist projects that develop “places” in the CBD, such as the proposed Margaret Olley civic gallery, providing strong reasons for people to visit and shop in Lismore. This position is funded by the Special Business Rate Variation Levy which is applied to property owners and business operators in Lismore’s metropolitan area.
  2. Woodlark Street in the Lismore CBD will get a $4.5million facelift starting July 2009. This upgrade will be the last of the Lismore CBD streets to receive beautification treatment. The upgrade includes new footpaths, drainage, more shade trees and sitting areas and improved access for cyclists and wheelchairs. Initial work  commenced in July 2009 and is expected to be completed by June 2010. The project has received generous funding support from the Federal Community Infrastructure Program.
